Farmers Receive Exotic Pigs For Breeding
Live stock farmers in Kiryandongo district have received 70 combrough pigs for breeding under Operation Wealth Creation. The 70 pigs which include 14 males and 56 females were distributed in a ratio of 1 boar to 4 gilts among 14 capable and interested breeders each getting five pigs.
The criteria of selecting the farmers was based on how prepared and ready the beneficiaries were and were later trained on how to manage the combrough breed.
While addressing the beneficiaries during the handover of the pigs on Tuesday April 30,2019 at the RDC’s office, Charles Ntairehoki Amooti the district chairman asked the farmers who don’t have enough food not to venture into piggery. “if you don’t have enough food, don’t rear pigs. Pigs have special food, grass just supplements.” Said Ntairehoki.
Ntairehoki also called upon the beneficiaries to take piggery as a serious business and always seek the technical guidance from the veterinary staff at lower local governments. He also asked the District Veterinay Officer, Dr. Tony Wabwire to organize exchange visits for farmers so as they learn from other districts.
During the same occasion, Peter Debele the Resident District Commissioner said the government does not segregate when delivering services to Ugandans. He added that projects such as breeding the combrough pigs are given to capable people who can manage them irrespective of their political affiliations.
Dr. Wabwire Tony the District Veterinary Officer warned the beneficiaries against treating the pigs given to them and asked them to make good use of the available veterinary doctors at sub-counties and town councils.
The breeders are expected to give back the first litter (piglets) so as they are distributed to other beneficiaries.
